Free Movie Night hosted by Sierra Club and the East Lake Washington Audubon Society (ELWAS). This documentary has almost no narration, a beautiful soundtrack and is filmed primarily from a bird’s perspective. It was a big hit in the theaters - this screen will be bigger than your TV, so enjoy!

We’ll have a 6:15 dinner-in-the-round with people from the community (bring your own brown bag dinner; hot beverages will be provided). The dinner topic/discussion will feature reports on how Kirkland, Redmond, Bellevue, and Issaquah are progressing on their �Cool Cities� programs.

�Winged Migration� is 90 minutes long, we will start at 7:15 and run until 8:45 (no discussion afterward) .

Using video clips from some of the world’s most respected thinkers, along with inspiring short films, leading edge information and dynamic group interactions, the Symposium allows participants to gain a new insight into the very nature of our time, and the opportunity we have to shape and impact the direction of our world with our everyday choices and action.The aim of the Symposium is not merely to learn more about the world, but to grapple and come to grips with the very assumptions that underlie the way we ourselves see the world and our place in it, and with what each of us can do - both individually and cooperatively - to move the world in this new direction.

Description: At the September 10 Seattle Metro Institute of Noetic Sciences Program, we showed and discussed the DVD of Andrew Harvey’s IONS 2007 Conference Plenary Session on Sacred Activism: The Power of Love and Wisdom in Action.

Harvey’s thesis is that when a profound and grounded mystical vision is married to a practical and pragmatic drive to transform all existing economic and political institutions, a tremendous holy force—the power of wisdom and love in action—is born. It is a force that can unleash, even in the middle of growing catastrophe, an unstoppable steady energy of hope and compassion. A compelling take-away question from this presentation was “What gives us a sense of urgency that compels us to take personal, passionate action in service to the common good?”

We will explore this compelling question at the October 8 Program focusing on Green October and related social activism issues and opportunities. Our emphasis is on individual and personal action rather than organizational/social network action. Join us for an introductory presentation on a discussion course from the NW Earth Institute: Choices for Sustainable Living. We plan on forming a discussion group from the people who come to the presentation. Readings for the course are pulled from a wide variety of sources (roughly forty), giving us a many viewpoints to reflect on and respond to. The course is eight sessions long, with details to be worked out at the presentation to suit the needs of those choosing to participate. Cost of the course is $20 (to cover the cost of the book). Faith communities have begun to ask how they can move beyond shelters and toward long-term housing solutions for the homeless. The Faith Community and Service Organization Symposium will give faith communities and service organizations the tools they need to create long-term housing to help end homelessness in our community. This symposium will bring together groups from across King County to discuss in practical, hands-on terms, what programs have worked, how they were created, what difficulties they encountered, and how they can be replicated. The seminars will be based on the actual programs and experiences of faith communities and service organizations in King County, and will be taught by the people who are actually implementing those programs. Each attendee will go home with a resource book that can be an ongoing reference manual as each group explores its options.

Seminars presented at the symposium will include: Three Ways to Help the Homeless Afford Housing; Buy a House, House a Family; Turn That Parking Lot/Parsonage Into Affordable Housing; Create Your Own Non-Profit for Housing; Do-It-Yourself or Partner With a Provider?; and What Everyone Needs to Know About People Without Homes.
